Loving Compassion Africa (LCA) has partnered with Sister Lucy and 'Tresgad Caring Hands Initiative' to help build, furnish and support an orphanage and meeting area for the local community. Tresgad has a very strong outreach program and is able to help a large number of street children, families, seniors and handicapped individuals
Jan met Sister Lucy Kingori in November 2021 . Here we are standing on top of the first floor of the Tresgad Children's home.
Sister Lucy and Tresgad Helping Hands Initiative
Sister Kingori started as a teacher in the north of Kenya. She found her time divided between teaching and helping children infected with jiggers (a parasitic sand flea), but saw so much suffering around her that she decided to study to become a nun and start her own local charity: Tresgad Helping Hands Initiative.
Her passion for helping children has led her to branch out into many areas. Tresgad still works with children infected with jiggers and other medical problems, runs many feeding and counselling projects and provides homes for street children. The number of orphans and street children in desperate need to food, shelter, education and love was overwhelming. Sister Lucy started sending these homeless orphaned children to her friends and family so they could care for them, and provide all the basic necessities that a child needs. However, she found she was running out of safe and reliable places to send these children, so she decided to build an orphanage for them.
She will be able to continue her work with street children, the local community, child education workshops, feeding programs etc through this center. The orphanage also provides a safe, loving and healthy place for more children to grow and prosper.
Orphanage construction was well underway when I met Sister Lucy. LCA provided Tresgad with the funds required to build a security wall and purchase a sturdy gate.
